This two volume set of Lorna Doone, A Romance of Exmoor was written by Richard Doddridge Blackmore and first published in 1869. Blackmore always insisted the novel was not historical but a romance novel. The first printing in three volumes was only 500 copies, not all sold. The book was rereleased the following year in one volume and has not been out of print since.
This edition in two volumes was published some time between 1890 and 1893, probably 1892, by The United States Book Company, New York and Chicago. Hardback with cherry red cloth covered boards and gold tipping on the top edges. No dust jacket. 681 pages total.
Condition is quite good for age. Both volumes have discoloration, fading and spots on the boards. The two volumes have matching bindings and have been together since given as a gift, year unknown. Owner's name is neatly in ink and stamped in both volumes.
Vol.1 the front board has separated from book a bit. You can see the spine but it is not loose or missing pages. It has spots on the inside margins for a few pages and the rest of the book is clean. Vol. 2 has no issues to note. Both spines have darkened with age and are difficult to read. They have a moderate Art Nouveau motif. Pages have tanning natural with age.
