This copy of Sketches By Boz is Volume XI in President Publishing Company's 20 volume set of the works of Charles Dickens. It was published in 1936 and includes all 56 of the stories and sketches from the original publication in 1936 plus revisions made by Dickens in 1867 and 1868. The book is 486 pages. Condition is very good.
The book is bound in taupe and black boards with red and gold added to the spine. It is solid, no writing and just the normal age tanning of the pages. The six illustrations are by George Cruickshank.
The first 3 sections of this collection are non-fiction: Our Parish, Scenes and Characters. The 4th section is fiction and called tales. All the sketchedsappeared in various English publications between December 1933 and December 1936.
Dickens published the earliest sketches without a signature. Then he signed The Boarding House Boz,
a nasal takeoff of the nickname he had for his brother Augustus whom he had called Moses. In 1937 a riddle appeared in Bentley's Miscellany laughingly asking Who the dickens Boz could be.
