The Jewish Problem by Louis Golding played an important role in the rise of anti-Semitism in Germany in the build up to World War Two. Golding was himself Jewish having immigrated to England with his family and his writings, mostly fiction, dealt with life as an integrated Jew. His most famous work of fiction was Magnolia Street. The Jewish Problem traces the history of anti-Semitism.
This soft cover copy is a stated first edition 1938 published as a Penguin Special by Penguin Books Limited. Penguin Specials were books of topical importance published within as short a time as possible from the receipt of the manuscript. As Germany prepared for war, many of the 1937-38 Penguin Specials dealt with the problems Hitler was creating. The book has 33 illustrations both engraving plates and photos. It has 213 pages.
This copy has seen considerable use. It is intact although the front cover has been glued and has a couple of tears. It is grimy from handling. It looks like it has been carried in a pocket. On one page in the middle of the book is an ink stamp stating RCAF Sergeant's Mess Coal Harbour, BC. I found a couple of colored pencil marks in the margin. No underlining or writing. A rare first edition of an important book in 20th century history.
