Reading this book is like listening to a Beethoven symphony. If you imagine being inside looking out at a large-flake snowstorm, you will understand the gentleness of this murder mystery.
Set on an island in the Pacific Northwest, the narrator is a lifelong resident and WWII vet who in his youth loved a Japanese girl. As he sits in the courtroom as a reporter of the murder of a fisherman, he ponders the town's recent history, the internment of the Japanese, his lost love whose husband is being tried for murder, and how all this will effect his reporting. When the town experiences a power outage in the midst of the blizzard and trial, things begin to come to light. Beautifully written with much to consider. Can't recommend it highly enough.
